Garage door motor not working?
The motor hums without moving, the light flashes red, or it no longer responds at all. 3 possible causes: burned-out control board, broken gear, or simple safety overload. Our technician diagnoses by phone and arrives with the right replacement motor.

Many motor breakdowns can be repaired on-site without full replacement.
Why your motor has stopped working
A faulty garage door motor has 4 main causes. The exact symptom helps identify the cause before the intervention.
Force safety triggered
The motor detects abnormal resistance (worn spring, obstructed rail, frozen door) and switches to safety mode. It stops moving but the motor itself is not the problem.
- Flashing light but motor intact
- Works after reset (unplug 30s)
- Problem returns after a few cycles
- The door is heavier than usual by hand
Burned-out control board
Power surge (lightning, grid outage), moisture or capacitor aging. The motor no longer responds at all - neither remote control nor wall button.
- No response (no LED, no sound, no movement)
- Failure occurred after a storm or power cut
- Smell of burned electronic component
- Garage fuse or circuit breaker tripping
Broken gear or belt
The output gear or toothed belt is worn or broken. The motor runs but no longer transfers movement to the carriage.
- Motor humming but door not moving
- Spinning sound without traction
- Hot plastic smell (nylon gear)
- Rail carriage not moving
Flat battery (ProMatic Akku)
The battery of a ProMatic Akku operator gradually loses capacity with age and use. The motor slows down then stops completely.
- Opening getting slower for weeks
- Motor stops mid-travel
- Works on mains but not on battery
- Battery LED flashing orange
What to do when the motor stops responding?
A failed motor leaves the door stuck but not necessarily dangerous. Here is how to manage it while waiting for the technician.
Disconnect the motor
Pull the red manual release cord to decouple the door from the motor. You can then open/close manually - provided the spring is intact (the door should feel light by hand).
Check the power supply
Check that the garage circuit breaker has not tripped. Unplug the motor for 30 seconds then plug it back in - a reset sometimes clears a safety lockout.
Call with the exact model
Read the label on the motor: brand (Hörmann or other), model (SupraMatic E4, ProMatic 2...) and serial number. Our technician prepares the part or replacement motor before travelling.
Motor repair
From phone diagnosis to working motor - here is how it works.
