Ordering a garage door often means dealing with technical jargon: U-value, RC2 class, EI30, BiSecur... This glossary explains each term in 2 minutes, with real examples from the Hörmann range we install in Luxembourg.

Mechanics

Components, opening and ceiling systems

Sectional door

Garage door made of horizontal hinged panels that rise to the ceiling along side tracks.

Torsion spring

Horizontal helical spring that balances the weight of the door leaf and allows effortless manual opening.

Roller box

Housing at the top of the opening that holds the rolled-up curtain of a roller door.

Lintel (header height)

Vertical space between the top of the opening and the ceiling of the garage. Determines the track type.

Ceiling-parking (up-and-over)

Opening system in which the door curtain rises vertically and then slides horizontally under the ceiling, guided by tracks.

Insulation & thermal

Energy performance, sealing

U-value (thermal insulation)

Measures heat loss through the door in W/m²K. The lower the number, the better the insulation.

Localised area of greater heat loss than the rest of the wall - typically the door frame.

Anti-burglary, personal safety, fire protection

Burglar resistance RC2

European burglar-resistance class per EN 1627: holds for 3 minutes against a casual burglar with simple tools.
