Garage door spring broken?
The torsion spring has snapped - you heard a violent bang, and the door became impossible to lift. This is the most dangerous breakdown: the spring stores 200 to 400 kg of mechanical force. Don't attempt anything, call immediately.

Most common breakdown - repaired on site.
Why your spring broke
A torsion spring doesn't break by chance. Here are the 4 main causes and how to identify them.
Mechanical fatigue (end of life)
A spring has a limited life in opening cycles. Over time, the metal fatigues and eventually snaps without warning.
- Door installed 12 to 18 years ago
- No annual maintenance performed
- Sudden break with no prior warning signs
Spring corrosion
Garage humidity (condensation, water ingress) oxidises the spring steel over months. The effective cross-section diminishes until it breaks.
- Visible rust on the spring before the break
- Damp or poorly ventilated garage
- Rust dust beneath the spring
Undersized spring
A spring too weak for the door panel weight (incorrect previous replacement, panel change without recalibration) wears out 2 to 3 times faster.
- Door heavy to lift manually for months
- Motor straining and frequently tripping safety
- Spring already replaced less than 5 years ago
Thermal or mechanical shock
A sudden frost (-15 °C) or a violent impact on the door (vehicle, heavy object) can weaken the spring and cause a delayed break.
- Break after an extreme cold spell
- Recent vehicle impact on the door
- Door squeaking since the incident
What to do when the spring has broken?
The torsion spring is the most dangerous part of a garage door. Here are the 3 absolute rules.
Do not touch the spring
Even broken, the two spring halves and the winding cones are under residual tension. Handling them can cause a violent release. Only a technician with a calibrated winding bar may intervene.
Stop using the door
Without a spring, the door weighs 80 to 120 kg on the motor, which is not designed for that load. Forcing the motor will burn out the circuit. If the door is open, prop it up - do not let it fall.
Call for a replacement
Replacement is carried out on site by an equipped technician. We calibrate the new spring exactly to your panel weight (no generic spring) for correct balancing and maximum longevity.
Spring replacement
From the first call to the new spring - here's how the replacement unfolds.
Phone diagnosis
The technician identifies the spring type (torsion, lateral, up-and-over) and prepares the right part.
Travel
Technician equipped for spring replacement. If the right spring has to be ordered, we tell you before the visit.
Replacement
Removal of the broken spring, fitting the new one, exact calibration to panel weight, balance test at mid-position.
Full test
Door tested through full open/close cycle, sensor check, motor reprogramming if needed.
Spring replacement price
The price is quoted before the intervention. You approve, we replace. No surprises.
Price on free quote. Final price depends on the exact spring calibration and accessibility.
