« Choosing an operator is not just about force. It is a balance between motor power, opening speed, frequency of use, smart home connectivity and anti-crush safety. A ProMatic 4 is more than enough for a detached house. But if you have an attached garage or want to control the door from your smartphone, the faster SupraMatic E4 with built-in Bluetooth changes everything. And for a very large door or very frequent use, the SupraMatic H4 (1,000 N, 150 cycles/day, 60 built-in LEDs) is like night and day. »
The 6 essential criteria
Before choosing a motorisation, these 6 criteria determine which motor is suited to your door, your usage frequency and your smart home needs. Our technicians verify them during the free visit in Luxembourg.
Matching tractive force
The operator's force (in Newtons) must match the weight and size of your door. The ProMatic 4 delivers 650 N (800 N peak) for doors up to 13.75 m². The SupraMatic E4 also delivers 650 N, with faster opening. For wide or heavy doors, the SupraMatic P4 (750 N, doors up to 6000 mm and 15 m²) and the H4 (1000 N, up to 7000 mm and 18 m²) take over. Undersizing = premature wear. Oversizing = needless consumption and excessive stress on the door.
Drive type
All Hörmann garage door operators (ProMatic 4, SupraMatic E4, P4 and H4) use a maintenance-free toothed belt in a rail, with soft start and soft stop for quiet operation - ideal for garages next to bedrooms. Opening noise is the no. 1 satisfaction criterion in joint ownership buildings.
Opening speed
Speed determines the waiting time at the garage entrance. ProMatic 4: up to 20 cm/s (~10 seconds for a 2 m door). SupraMatic E4, P4 and H4: up to 25 cm/s (~8 seconds). For intensive use (joint ownership, business), every second counts. The number of daily cycles also matters: 25 cycles/day for the ProMatic 4 and SupraMatic E4, 50 for the P4 and 150 for the H4.
Connectivity & smart home
Hörmann's BiSecur radio system works at 868 MHz with 128-bit encryption (Hörmann compares its security to online banking). Range depends on the surroundings (around 30 m as a guide). SupraMatic 4 operators have built-in Bluetooth (BlueSecur app), optional on the ProMatic 4. For Apple Home, Amazon Alexa and Google Home, you add the Hörmann WLAN-Gateway, connected to the operator via the HCP bus (HAP 1 HCP adapter). A KNX gateway enables integration into a KNX home automation bus. The EcoStar Liftronic II use the 433 MHz BiSecur system, also with 128-bit encryption.
Anti-crush safety
Standard EN 12453 mandates a maximum dynamic force of 400N and a static force of 150N after 5 seconds. All Hörmann motors meet this standard with integrated obstacle detection: the motor automatically reverses the door if it encounters resistance. Optional photocells add further safety. The automatic travel-learning function enables the motor to detect any movement anomaly.
Intensive or residential use
The maximum number of daily cycles determines the recommended use. ProMatic 4 and SupraMatic E4: 25 cycles/day - perfect for a detached house (4-6 openings/day in practice) or frequent use. SupraMatic P4: 50 cycles/day; SupraMatic H4: 150 cycles/day - suited to large doors and intensive use. For collective garages, Hörmann offers dedicated operators (SupraMatic HT, ITO 500 FU). The EcoStar Liftronic suits simple residential use.

Energy efficiency & consumption
Hörmann operators are designed for low consumption. On standby, the SupraMatic 4 and ProMatic 4 use 0.6 W - around 5.3 kWh per year, the equivalent of a few euros on your annual bill. Their motor runs on 24V DC (direct current), with soft start and soft stop.
The annual consumption of a residential operator remains very low: a few euros of electricity per year, mostly due to standby. All Hörmann garage door operators use a maintenance-free toothed belt in a rail.
Hörmann operators work naturally with a residential solar PV installation. The WLAN-Gateway, which links the operator to your home network, adds no noticeable extra consumption.

Current Hörmann garage door operators use 0.6 W on standby, around 5 kWh per year.
« People often ask me whether the operator uses a lot of power. The answer is no: 0.6 W on standby, less than an internet router. The real criterion is not consumption - it is comfort. Opening your garage from your car in winter without stepping out into the rain is priceless. And Hörmann compares BiSecur security to that of online banking. »

Get my precise quoteFault diagnosis common issues
The 9 most common problems on Hörmann and EcoStar garage door motorisations, with probable cause, solution and intervention level. Cases marked 'Pro' require a certified technician.
| Problem | Probable cause | Solution | Level |
| Motor hums but doesn't move | Door spring unbalanced, force limit reached, obstacle blocking the door. | Check spring balance (disengage and lift door manually - it should stay in position). If the spring is the cause: call a pro for force recalibration. | Pro advised |
| Door reverses without obstacle | Photocells dirty or misaligned, obstacle detection sensitivity too high. | Clean photocells with a soft cloth. Check alignment (LED indicators should be steady). Readjust if necessary. | DIY possible |
| Remote works intermittently | Weak batteries, BiSecur protocol interference, remote unpaired. | Replace batteries (CR2032 or AAA). Re-pair via the P button on the BiSecur receiver. Check for interference sources (LEDs, transformers). | DIY possible |
| Motor makes grinding noise | Belt or chain worn, gears worn, rail not lubricated. | Visually inspect belt/chain condition. If wear is visible: replacement by a pro. If simply lack of lubrication: silicone spray on the rail. | Pro advised |
| Door won't close with remote | Receiver unplugged, limit switch misadjusted, lock activated. | Check motor power supply (wall outlet). Test the wall button. Check that child lock isn't activated on the remote. | DIY possible |
| Motor runs but door doesn't move | Coupling broken, manual release engaged, belt/chain snapped. | Check if the manual release (Notentriegelung) isn't activated. If the coupling is broken: mandatory pro intervention to replace the mechanism. | Pro advised |
| WiFi/BiSecur gateway is offline | Router change, network configuration lost, internet outage. | Check the router and internet connection. Restart the gateway. Reconfigure via the Apple Home app, homee or, for the older BiSecur Gateway, the BiSecur app. Check the firmware. | DIY possible |
| Door opens too slowly | Force setting too low, rail friction, spring slack. | Check rail lubrication (silicone spray, never WD-40). If the rail is clean and the door remains slow: call a pro to adjust force settings. | DIY possible |
| Motor LED flashes error code | Internal error, thermal protection activated, electronic fault. | Disconnect power for 30 seconds, then reconnect. If the code persists: pro diagnosis required. The flash code indicates the error type in the manual. | URGENT - Stop |

Maintenance routine
A well-maintained Hörmann operator lasts many years. The routine is simple and only takes a few minutes a month. Here are the key steps to ensure the longevity and safety of your operator.
Safety test & sensor cleaning
Test auto-reverse: place an object (cardboard) on the floor during closing - the door must reverse. Clean photocells with a dry microfibre cloth.
Rail lubrication
Apply silicone spray to the guide rail (a few seconds is enough). Never use WD-40. Check belt or chain tension.
Motor mounting inspection
Check motor mounting points on the ceiling (vibrations = possible loosening). Inspect electrical connections (plug, cables). Test manual release.
Full diagnostic
Full diagnostic by a technician: force recalibration, travel check, EN 12453 safety test, BiSecur re-pairing if needed, belt wear inspection.
Recommended products
- Technical silicone spray (Hörmann or equivalent)
- Soft microfibre cloth
- CR2032/AAA spare batteries for remotes
- Electronic contact cleaner (for photocells)
Absolutely avoid
- WD-40 (attracts dust, fouls the rail)
- Thick grease (jams the belt mechanism)
- Opening the motor housing (proprietary circuits, electrical hazard)
- Adjusting force limits beyond specifications
- Ignoring a flashing LED error code
What you can do yourself
A garage door motorisation combines mechanics, electricity and electronics. Some operations are safe and recommended as DIY, others absolutely require a certified technician. Here is the clear split.
You can do this
- Test auto-reverse monthlyPlace cardboard on the floor during closing: the door must reverse. EN 12453 safety test, simple and essential.
- Clean the photocellsDry microfibre cloth on the photocells at the bottom of the rails. This is the #1 cause of false obstacle detections.
- Change remote batteriesStandard CR2032 or AAA battery. Re-pair via the P button on the BiSecur receiver if needed.
- Lubricate the rail with silicone sprayA few seconds of silicone spray on the rail. Switch off the motor first. Never WD-40.
- Check the power supplyCheck the wall outlet, circuit breaker, and motor housing LED. Test the wall button.
- Check belt tensionThe belt should be taut but not rigid. 1-2 cm play is normal. If slack: call a pro.
Never without a pro
- Open the motor housingHörmann proprietary circuits, charged capacitors, factory programming. Real electrical hazard.
- Adjust force limits beyond specStandard EN 12453 limits force to 400N dynamic and 150N static. Exceeding these values = crush hazard.
- Replace the belt or chainRequires rail removal, precise calibration and safety testing. Specialised tools needed.
- Work on electrical wiring230V connection, earthing, photocells. Only by a qualified electrician.
- Bypass thermal protectionIf the motor overheats, thermal protection cuts power. Forcing the motor = fire risk.
Warning - crush force
Standard EN 12453 mandates a maximum dynamic force of 400N and a static force of 150N after 5 seconds. Any modification of force settings beyond these limits is illegal and dangerous. If your door no longer detects obstacles or the force seems excessive, cut the power and call a qualified technician.
