The sectional garage door
in Luxembourg
The sectional door is the number-one choice in Luxembourg for integral garages. Optimal insulation, no external overhang, contemporary aesthetics: this guide covers all the criteria you need to know before investing, tailored to Luxembourg's climate and residential architecture.
The advantages of the sectional door
The sectional door has become the standard in Luxembourg thanks to its versatility. Here is how it compares to the other door types we install every week for clients from Sandweiler to Differdange.
| Type | Main advantage | Space required | Ideal for |
Sectional | Best insulation (LPU 67 Thermo: U 1.0 W/m²K installed door) | No external overhang | Integral garage, villas in Kiem, Belair, Strassen |
Up-and-over | Robustness and controlled budget | External overhang ~1 m | Large individual garages in village houses |
Roller | Maximum space saving | Curtain in lintel housing | Small urban garages, low lintel in Bonnevoie or Gare |
Side-hinged | Partial pedestrian opening | Lateral wall clearance required | Frequent on-foot access, workshop or cellar |
Swing | Traditional aesthetics | Large external overhang | Character properties and renovated farmhouses in the Ardennes |

The 6 essential criteria
Before choosing your sectional door model, these 6 criteria will determine the success of your project. Our technicians review them at every free site visit across Luxembourg.
Headroom & fittings
Headroom - the space between the top of the opening and the ceiling - determines which track type to choose. On Hörmann LPU sectional doors, Z (tension springs) and L (low headroom, torsion springs) tracks need just 115 mm for a powered door (100 mm manual), the N track needs 210 mm, and the H track, whose rails run up the wall, is for large headroom (not available on the LPU 67 Thermo). ThermoFrame or RC2 equipment slightly increases the headroom required. During the free visit, we measure your headroom to the millimetre and propose the compatible track - essential in older Luxembourg houses with unusual ceilings.
Thermal insulation
In Luxembourg, a poorly insulated integral garage can cost a lot every year in heat loss. Aim at least for the level of an LPU 42 (U = 1.3 W/m²K installed), or even 1.0 W/m²K with an LPU 67 Thermo. Standard 42 mm panels cover 90 % of residential requirements; 67 mm is recommended for heated garages and workshops.
Burglar resistance
Multi-point locking, fall protection, obstacle detection, anti-lift resistance: with a Hörmann operator, LPU sectional doors are protected against being forced up by a mechanical lock in the rail, and the LPU 67 Thermo also has RC2 burglar-resistant equipment as standard (optional on the LPU 42). Essential in residential neighbourhoods.
Overall budget
The price, including installation and motorisation, is set on a free quote depending on the range level (from entry-level motorised to 67 mm premium with bespoke finish). The quote covers removal of the existing door, site coordination and remote-control handover.
Hörmann surface finishes
Hörmann offers 7 surfaces on the LPU 42 sectional door: Woodgrain (wood grain), Slategrain (slate look), Silkgrain (smooth and elegant), Sandgrain (fine sand texture, 2 colours), Planar (smooth matt, 7 Matt deluxe colours), Decograin (6 wood or metallic finishes) and Duragrain (30 printed designs, L-ribbing). Woodgrain, Slategrain and Silkgrain come in 16 preferred colours or around 200 RAL colours. The choice of surface shapes the final look far more than the colour itself.
Motorisation
SupraMatic E4 (BiSecur-connected, quiet, ideal for attached garages), ProMatic 4 (robust, everyday use), industrial operators for co-ownerships. All connect to Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home via the optional Hörmann WLAN Gateway.

Insulation & performance
In Luxembourg, a poorly insulated integral garage can reduce the temperature of adjacent rooms by 3 to 5 °C in winter. The door, being the largest opening in the building, is the weak link if not chosen correctly - particularly in energy-efficient homes where it becomes the primary thermal bridge.
Double-skin galvanised steel panels filled with CFC-free polyurethane foam deliver the best performance. The standard 42 mm thickness (LPU 42) reaches a U-value of 1.3 W/m²K installed. The LPU 67 Thermo, with its thermally broken 67 mm panels, gets down to 1.0 W/m²K installed (0.91 W/m²K with the optional ThermoFrame): the best-insulated door in Hörmann's residential range.
Beyond the panel, perimeter seals and the floor threshold complete the weathersealing. On the LPU 67 Thermo, a double lip seal between the panels further limits air infiltration, and the optional ThermoFrame eliminates the thermal bridge between frame and masonry - a key criterion in Luxembourg, where winters can drop to -15 °C in the Ardennes.

« Choosing the right product range is not purely a matter of budget. It is first and foremost a question of use: a garage adjoining a bedroom or home office requires premium 67 mm insulation. A detached outbuilding can make do with 42 mm. »

Get my precise quoteDiagnosing common faults
The 9 most common problems on a sectional door, with likely cause, the solution to apply and the level of intervention. Cases marked « URGENT » require the door to be stopped immediately - springs and cables store considerable energy.
| Problem | Likely cause | Solution | Level |
| The door will not open at all | Remote control (flat batteries), receiver unplugged, motor safety cut-out triggered (force exceeded), limit switch incorrectly set. | Replace batteries, check motor power supply, press the wall button. If the motor hums without movement: do not force it, cut the power and call a professional. | DIY possible |
| The door squeaks or bangs with every operation | Worn rollers, dry hinges, loose track screws, motor dampers at end of life. | Lubricate rollers and hinges with silicone spray (never WD-40), tighten visible fixings. If the noise persists: have rollers and dampers replaced by a professional. | DIY possible |
| The door jams mid-travel | Obstruction in the tracks, faulty roller, motor limit switch out of adjustment, abnormal mechanical resistance. | Visually inspect the tracks (leaves, gravel, cobwebs) and clean. If nothing visible: do not force, motor diagnosis required. | Pro recommended |
| The door drops back down immediately after opening | Dirty or misaligned photocells, reversed limit setting, invisible obstruction (insect inside the photocell). | Wipe both photocells with a dry microfibre cloth, check their alignment (green LED facing each other), clear any obstruction. | DIY possible |
| One side of the door rises faster than the other | Cable slack or broken on one side, unbalanced torsion spring, roller jammed in a track. | STOP IMMEDIATELY - do not use the door again. Cables and springs are under extreme tension; any amateur intervention is dangerous. | URGENT - Stop |
| The door is visibly out of alignment | Broken torsion spring, snapped cable, track misaligned after an impact. | STOP IMMEDIATELY - cut motor power, secure the area and call a technician. Risk of the panel falling. | URGENT - Stop |
| The door rubs against the frame when closing | Tracks out of adjustment, deformed perimeter seals, warped bottom panel, dirty threshold. | Clean the threshold, check the condition of the EPDM seals. If the tracks are bent or the panel is warped: professional intervention required. | Pro recommended |
| The remote control no longer works | Flat batteries, remote unpaired, faulty BiSecur receiver, radio interference. | Replace batteries, re-pair the remote via the P button on the receiver (Hörmann BiSecur procedure). If that fails: receiver diagnosis. | DIY possible |
| Cold draught under the bottom of the door | Worn bottom seal, non-airtight floor threshold, deformed bottom panel. | Replace the bottom seal (standard clip-in part) or fit a draught-excluder threshold. If the panel is deformed: obtain a replacement quote. | DIY possible |

Essential maintenance routine
A Hörmann sectional door lasts 20 to 25 years when properly maintained. Here is the simple routine you can carry out yourself to keep your mechanisms quiet, your sensors reliable and your seals airtight.
Photocell cleaning
Wipe both photocells at the base of the tracks with a dry microfibre cloth. This is the number-one cause of faults in winter: dust, cobwebs and insects triggering the auto-reverse.
Lubricate rollers & hinges
A single spray of silicone lubricant (never WD-40, which attracts dust) on the roller axles, vertical hinges and horizontal articulations. A few seconds is all it takes.
Tighten fixings
Check that all visible screws on the tracks and frame are tight (crosshead screwdriver). Daily vibration gradually works fixings loose.
Full inspection
Safety test (place your hand on the ground during closing: the door must reverse), visual inspection of EPDM seals, check cables and springs (without touching), clean panels with diluted neutral soap.
Recommended products
- Technical silicone spray (Hörmann or equivalent)
- Dry microfibre cloth
- Diluted neutral soap (panels only)
- Short crosshead screwdriver (tightening)
- Replacement bottom seal (consumable part)
Always avoid
- WD-40 (attracts dust, clogs the rollers)
- Thick grease (binds mechanisms and blocks tracks)
- Pressure washer (damages EPDM seals)
- Solvents, white spirit, acetone (damage panels)
- Dismantling torsion springs (risk to life)
What you can do yourself
A sectional door contains components under extreme tension (torsion springs, cables). Below is a clear breakdown of what a homeowner can safely maintain and what must be left to a qualified technician without exception.
You can do this
- Clean photocells and tracksDry microfibre cloth, no products. Zero-tension zone, no risk.
- Lubricate rollers and hingesSilicone spray only, 2 seconds per point. Switch off the motor first.
- Replace remote-control batteriesStandard CR2032 or AAA depending on model. Close the casing without forcing.
- Tighten visible fixingsTracks, frame, plastic stops. Moderate torque - never overtighten a thread.
- Replace the bottom sealClip-in replacement part, slides into the channel on the bottom panel.
- Monthly safety testPlace your hand on the ground during closing: the door must reverse automatically.
Never without a professional
- Remove a torsion springThe springs store considerable energy. Breakage = serious or even fatal injury.
- Tension or detension a springRequires a calibrated specialist tool and a precise assessment of the panel weight.
- Replace a lifting cableCables are under the direct tension of the spring. Hazardous operation.
- Open the motor housingHigh-voltage circuits, residual capacitors, proprietary Hörmann programming.
- Straighten a bent trackAffects the entire panel balance. A poorly straightened track accelerates wear.
- Replace a warped panelRequires partial disassembly of the panel stack and re-tensioning of the cables.
Warning - torsion springs
The torsion springs of a sectional door store considerable mechanical energy. Accidental breakage or inexpert handling can cause serious or even fatal injury. If your door is crooked, one side rises faster than the other, or you hear a sharp bang for no apparent reason: stop using the door immediately and call a certified technician.
