Torsion spring
Horizontal helical spring that balances the weight of the door leaf and allows effortless manual opening.
Definition
The torsion spring is mounted on a horizontal shaft above the door. It twists under tension when the door closes and releases this energy on opening, balancing the door leaf weight (100 to 200 kg depending on size). This is what lets a non-motorised door open with a light push.
Service life
- Standard: designed for normal residential use; Hörmann does not publish a cycle count for its garage doors.
- Hörmann industrial doors: up to 50,000 cycles as standard and up to 200,000 with the optional long-life equipment.
- Wear signs: the door becomes hard to open manually or no longer holds mid-travel.
Safety
- The springs are under very high tension. Replacing them is extremely dangerous without specific tools (winding bars).
- Hörmann sectional doors are protected if a spring breaks: a spring-break safety device on torsion springs, and a spring-in-spring system with twin cables on tension springs.
- Never intervene alone - always call a professional.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a torsion spring replacement cost in Luxembourg?
A torsion spring replacement on a standard sectional door is quoted on request in Luxembourg - typically a short call-out, part + labour, with a full pair swap recommended.
Can I change a spring myself?
No, absolutely not. The tension stored in a torsion spring is potentially fatal. The task requires winding bars, experience and safety gear. Always call a professional.
