Photocell
Infrared sensor installed on each side of the door that reverses travel if the beam is broken.
Definition
Photocells consist of an infrared emitter and receiver placed 150-200 mm above the floor, on each side of the opening. As long as the beam is continuous, the door keeps moving. As soon as it is broken (child, animal, obstacle), the door stops and reverses. It is the primary safety device required by EN 13241.
Installation height
- Standard: 150-200 mm - detects a lying child or small animal.
- Additional set at 500 mm possible for enhanced safety.
- A second set can be added mid-height for low-profile cars.
Common faults
- Misalignment: from vibration or impact.
- Dust / cobweb: clean with soapy water every 6 months.
- Enclosure moisture: check sealing, especially in winter.
- IR diode failure: replace (20-year lifespan).

Frequently asked questions
Are photocells mandatory?
Yes, for every motorised door sold in Europe since 2005 (EN 13241). A photocell-free operator would be non-compliant and expose the installer to liability in case of accident.
